In November 2022, we commenced our second Hear for the Holidays campaign. This is our way of giving back to the Maryland community and improving the quality of life for seven lucky individuals.
We received even more nominations than last year, each filled with inspiring stories of individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles. These nominations are the backbone of our giveaway, and it has been heart-warming to read how much you all care about your family and friends.
After much deliberation, we are pleased to present the winners of Hear for the Holidays 2022. Read on to hear their stories and discover why they deserved to win.
Wilkens Winner, Fred Carter
Fred has been experiencing a decline in his hearing for five years now. Each year was getting progressively worse, and something needed to be done to stop the trend.
Throughout those five years, Fred was becoming frustrated at having to repeat himself and constantly losing track of conversations. This was happening so much that he noticed himself becoming more of an introvert.
Winning the hearing aids and with his rejuvenated hearing, Fred describes the feeling as the same as Christmas coming early. He feels more blessed than ever.
He wants to thank the person that nominated him as well as the staff at Audiology Associates. He was overwhelmed by the support and professionalism displayed by everyone.
Enjoy your new healthy hearing, Fred; we are glad to lend a helping hand.
Timonium Winner, Sandra Macon
Sandra is a proud mother and grandmother who always puts her family first. Her daughter made it clear in her nomination that Sandra was a massive part of her life and her granddaughter’s.
Sandra even put her own life on hold to help her granddaughter during the early stages of her life. Grace needed much medical intervention early on and could only have gotten through it with the love and dedication displayed by her grandmother.
Seeing the look on Sandra’s face when she was told she had won our contest was a fantastic moment. She was over the moon and excited about how healthy hearing would improve her life with her daughter and granddaughter.
Congratulations!
Carney Winner, Mark Santoro
Mark undoubtedly had a severe hearing loss. During the last two years, it was significantly affecting his work. Mark has worked in retail for over 30 years and relies on his hearing for optimal communication.
His hearing loss had become a source of great stress, as he had to do his best to read lips or concentrate really, really hard just to get the gist of the conversation. Not only that, he couldn’t hear anything behind or to the sides of him and had advanced tinnitus that caused ringing in his ears.
With all this pressure on him, it was very heart-warming to see the weight being lifted when he found out he won. One of his sisters, who nominated him, was there for the big reveal. She said Mark doesn’t normally get emotional, but the gravity of the situation was too much, even for a tough guy like Mark.
We wish you all the best at home and back at work, Mark; you deserve it!
Ellicot City Winner, Scott Miller
Our Ellicot winner has one of the best attitudes in the world. His charm and love for his family are evident in everything he does. That’s why it was so important that we step in and help him get back on track with healthy hearing.
His hearing loss was affecting his home life to the point that he was missing all the best moments. He had to ignore conversations simply because he wasn’t following them.
Once he was informed that he had won, Mr. Miller joked by saying the new hearing aids would help him hear what people have been saying about him this whole time.
Thanks to his daughter’s lovely nomination letter, Mr. Miller can get back to enjoying his family and hear his kids and grandkids much better now.
Enjoy, Mr. Miller; we are so very happy for you and your family.
Glen Burnie Winner, Robert Warren
For musicians, hearing loss can be extra cruel. Not only do you lose touch with your family and friends but also your passion for being able to enjoy something that touches your heart.
That was the case with our Glen Burnie winner, Bob, who regularly sings with a local blind organization, including Christmas carols during the holiday season.
For years, Bob has not been able to enjoy his passion to its fullest. He has trouble differentiating sounds and has even admitted to being embarrassed by his hearing. Although he puts on a strong front, it’s clear that hearing has affected him extensively throughout the years.
With his new hearing aids, he immediately noticed a difference and was excited to get back to singing with the blind community. He also looks forward to listening to more music in his spare time since, until now, he was mostly listening to talk radio.
Congratulations, Bob; we can’t wait to see you perform more in public and enjoy your beautiful music.
North Washington Winner, Theresa Black
Theresa is a long-time teacher who is no stranger to the pain and anguish felt by long-term hearing loss. Over time, her hearing has steadily declined, and her insurance company was unwilling to cover the cost of her treatment.
She was having trouble determining where sounds were coming from, causing her confusion and mental stress. Due to her ears being at different levels of hearing loss, she could not enjoy music unless the volume was turned all the way up.
Theresa looks forward to a renewed sense of confidence with her customized hearing aids. Being able to enjoy work more and her favorite songs will reinvigorate her.
She is touched by those that nominated her and feels blessed that she has crossed paths with Jessica and the entire team at Audiology Associates.
Easton Winner, Daryl Lyerly
When teaching music, Daryl was having serious difficulties with her hearing. She was able to hear music but not quite as well. However, when music was present, she couldn’t hear anything else, such as requests or questions from her students.
Outside the classroom, her hearing loss was evident, as she admits to faking her way through conversations. New hearing aids will make a considerable improvement in her life, as she will be able to help her students even more and hear all the small things that make life so special.
Daryl was very moved when she learned she was our Easton winner. She thanks those who nominated her and is grateful for the new sense of excitement that new hearing aids will bring.
