It can be challenging for new hearing aid wearers to assimilate to the new routine of wearing hearing aids. Although the hearing aids make a world of difference to the performance of your hearing, they’re also a considerable change in your daily routine.
We have helped thousands of patients in Maryland make this transition from not wearing hearing aids to wearing them all the time. We are familiar with the common pitfalls and positive attributes that come with hearing better.
The Benefits Of Wearing Your Hearing Aids All The Time
Wearing your hearing aids all day helps your brain to adjust to the amplification. Just like anything else in life, practice makes perfect. Wearing your hearing aids will become a habit only if you put forth the effort.
Wearing them all the time also helps your ears desensitize to the feeling of the aids in your ear canals. The more you wear your hearing aids, the more benefit you will get from them.
Sleeping With Hearing Aids
If you need to sleep with your hearing aids in, you can, but I typically recommend taking them out at night to give your ears a break and save battery life/charge them.
We generally advise people not to wear hearing aids when sleeping. However, some people feel insecure when they go to sleep and cannot detect sounds in the environment that could alert them to danger. If you don’t feel safe without them, you can wear them at night.
Just be aware that you will need to change the batteries more frequently or find time to recharge them the next day if you have rechargeable aids. You can always get a backup set of aids to use at night.
Accidentally Falling Asleep With Your Hearing Aids In
Don’t panic if you accidentally fall asleep with hearing aids in your ears. There is no risk of the hearing aids malfunctioning just because you slept in them.
The real danger is discomfort or losing the hearing aids. Just try to get into the habit of putting your hearing aids in a safe spot when you’re ready for a nap.
What To Do With Your Hearing Aids When Not Wearing Them
Keeping your hearing aids in a safe carrying case is best for storing them. Carrying cases can protect them from drops or any water that they may encounter.
Cases are small and discreet so that you can keep them on you all the time. They are perfect for holding your hearing aids while you take a nap or go for a swim.
You can also put them on the charger as well. This is a safe place for them and will ensure you always use them with plenty of battery power. Most chargers turn off when your aids are at full strength. This prevents the battery from burning out.
