Does My Insurance Cover Me For Hearing Aids?

Does My Insurance Cover Me For Hearing Aids?

by | Nov 29, 2019 | Hearing Aids, Insurance, Patient Resources

There’s no doubt about it – sifting through your insurance documents and figuring out what your insurance does and doesn’t cover can often be a baffling and time-consuming process. Patients often ask us for advice once they learn they need to purchase hearing aids.

So we’ve put together this blog to get you started. However, if you need further assistance, Audiology Associates can help you out. You’ll be glad to know that we partner with all major insurance providers.

Hearing aid expenses

Before you do anything, it is essential to review the different types of hearing aids with your audiologist. Ask about the different features and what they recommend is best for you.

Then sit down and consider your options. Ask yourself which features you absolutely need, which features you’d like but would still be okay without them, and which features are completely unnecessary.

The price of hearing aids can vary depending on which features you choose. Investigate those that meet your must-have list and your would-like-to-have list, and then select the ones that are within your budget.

If your insurance plan doesn’t cover any of the features you need, we can discuss finance plans with you.

Different coverage types

Coverage includes:

  • Medicaid – Partial or complete hearing aid costs in most states.
  • Medicare – No hearing aid costs are covered.
  • Private health insurance – See your individual plan for details.
  • Veterans Administration benefits – Hearing aids are available to qualified veterans via VA healthcare facilities.

Questions worth asking your insurance provider

  1. “How much of my hearing aid costs do you cover? Full costs or partial costs?”
  2. “Can I only use certain hearing aid providers?”
  3. “Does my hearing aid provider bill you directly, or do I pay my hearing aid provider and you’ll reimburse me later?”
  4. “Can I only choose certain hearing aid models or can I select the one I want?”
