With its huge success, we are now a regular guest on the show. So, you can tune in to get expert advice, free of charge! In our most recent episode, Dr Melissa Segev explored the long-term effects of hearing loss and its impact on the brain, as well as the causes of tinnitus.

This article follows the range of topics we discussed.

What are the Impacts of Hearing Loss?

As specialists, we know that life gets busy, and it can be hard to schedule in a hearing assessment, especially with the new regulations in place. However, in this program, Dr Melissa Segev outlined the scary impacts of leaving your hearing loss to digress until it has seriously deteriorated.

For those who suffer from hearing loss, conversations can become difficult, and group settings where there are multiple people talking may be completely overwhelming. As a result of excessive concentration during conversations, the individual may eventually suffer from cognitive issues and brain fatigue.

This then leads to a domino effect where they may isolate themselves and develop severe mental health disorders. Jeff Michaels was shocked to hear that hearing loss can spiral so quickly, and many of our patients are too!

How has COVID-19 Impacted This?

Recent research has found the long-term impact of stress on hearing loss and how it can contribute to the overall problem. As we are all staying inside more often, the brain is not necessarily getting enough auditory stimulation, meaning it deteriorates at a much faster rate.

Dr Melissa Segev also outlined the correlation between dementia and hearing loss, which is as a result of poor brain cognition. If you or a loved one is experiencing hearing issues, please get in touch! If you act now, you have an increased chance of getting some, if not all, of your hearing back.

What About Tinnitus?

As a result of the pandemic, we have seen a lot of people coming to us because their tinnitus has become worse and the ringing sound is becoming a lot more obvious. This is also because you are not stimulating that part of your brain anymore, so it creates that sound to make up for it. Unfortunately, this is the case for many people in isolation; however, there are ways to stop it from getting worse.

What many people don’t know is that tinnitus is often as a result of hearing loss. So, by leaving your hearing to deteriorate, it can contribute toward your chances of it developing.

What if I’m Concerned?

If this is you, and you are concerned about your hearing but are worried about coming into the clinic, please be assured by our strict regulations in place, which ensures your safety is prioritised. The best thing you can do is book yourself in for a comprehensive hearing assessment, so we can tackle the problem now – before it severely digresses.

Keep it in Your Diary!

We are so excited to be a part of this project and look forward to the oncoming weeks, where we will unravel many topics in the hearing care industry! Hopefully, by doing our bit, we can spread more awareness on the importance of hearing care.
