Are you so frustrated with the poor performance of your hearing aid that you are ready to toss it in the junk drawer with all your other useless electronic gadgets?

Besides being a waste of money, the cost of abandoning your hearing aids adds up to a greater risk of increased mental and physical health issues.

Repairing a malfunctioning hearing aid is minimal when compared to the consequences of being without it. To prevent you from tossing your hearing aids in the junk drawer, we provide hearing aid wearers in Maryland and the greater DC area with maintenance and repair for their devices.

Some Common Hearing Aid Issues

We see several issues when malfunctioning or poor performing hearing aids arrive in our office for repair, including:

  • Accumulation of Earwax. Wax filters and cleaning tools are often included with hearing aids because between 20% and 30% of hearing aid breakdowns result from earwax buildup in internal tubing and delicate electronic components.
  • Moisture Damage. The worst enemy of delicate electronic components is moisture because it causes corrosion. Corrosion leads to circuit failure, reduced performance and/or a complete shut down of the device.
  • Physical Defects and Damage. More obvious damage includes a broken case and/or loose wires from dropping or stepping on the device. However, less noticeable issues can include damaged or defective microphones, receivers, tubes, tips, and earmolds, which hamper the performance of the device.

Cleaning and maintenance of your device on a daily basis is an excellent habit to develop. In addition to helping eliminate earwax and moisture damage, you are better able to recognize physical damage and defects before they cause serious problems and a more costly repair.

Hearing Aid Repair Costs

Our patients are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty, which means that problems with the device or a lost instrument will be replaced by the manufacturer.

  • A Treatment plan: covers the devices and all visits for 1 to 5 years. The charge would be $0.00.
  • A manufacturers warranty: on the hearing aids would incur a $60 office charge for our time and service, providing cleaning and replacing parts.
  • If your device is out of warranty and we can fix it in the office, it would incur a $60 office charge and then additional charges for any parts (eg. replacing a receiver, $150.00)
  • If you are out of manufacturer warranty completely than it has to be outsourced to a hearing aid lab and the charge for that is $370.00 per ear. That repair comes with a 6 to 12 mth warranty from the hearing aid repair company.

To keep repair costs down, your best option is to take advantage of regular hearing aid checkups and bring your device to us the moment you notice a problem.

When Is Replacement Better than Repair?

To replace rather than repair your hearing aid is the better option under certain circumstances.

Instruments between three and five years old are near the end of their designed service life.

Outdated technology makes it more difficult to find replacement parts, and you begin to miss out on the advantages provided by the innovative features of new devices.

Replacement is the better option for units that have seen extensive damage or undergone multiple repairs, even if they are less than three years old, because potential repair costs might cost more than investing in a new unit.

Daily Care Reduces Hearing Aid Repair Costs

Proper storage and handling, along with daily care of your hearing aids, helps avoid damage from earwax buildup, moisture, debris, and excessive temperatures. Daily care helps them perform better, extend their service life, reduces repair costs, and ought to include:

  • Cleaning, inspection, and handling over a soft surface
  • Eliminating moisture, especially in the battery compartment
  • Avoid damage by pets and children, UV exposure, and extreme temperatures through proper storage
  • Keep them away from harsh chemicals (hair care products, colognes, cleaning solvents, etc.)
