At Audiology Associates, you can always count on a team that believes in giving back. Supporting your community means more than providing hearing care; it’s about helping you and your loved ones live life to the fullest.

That’s why, every year, we look for ways to make a difference. This Giving Tuesday, you helped us find someone truly deserving of a life-changing gift: a comprehensive hearing assessment and a brand-new set of hearing aids, at no cost.

This year, nominations poured in from across Maryland and DC. Each story touched our hearts, but one story of resilience, family, and hope stood out to all of us. We are honored to introduce you to Michael, the recipient of this year’s Giving Tuesday award.

Michael’s Story: A Decade Without Hearing

Michael, a 32-year-old father of three from the Baltimore area, spent more than twelve years living with significant hearing loss and without hearing aids.

For over a decade, he navigated the world in near-silence, missing out on the everyday sounds that many people take for granted.

Michael’s journey with hearing loss began early in life. “My mom realized something was wrong because I couldn’t really speak,” he recalled. “They did a hearing test and found out I couldn’t hear.”

The cause of his hearing loss was never clearly identified, but its impact shaped nearly every aspect of his life. Despite these challenges, Michael never let his hearing loss define him. He built a life centered around hard work, family, and selflessness.

The Heart of a Family Man

You can see Michael’s dedication in everything he does. He works as a diesel mechanic at a heavy-duty truck and trailer repair shop, often clocking more than 50 hours a week.

After long, physically demanding days, he returns home to care for his three children, two of whom are on the autism spectrum, while his wife heads to work.

Communication is essential in Michael’s household, and his hearing loss made it difficult to connect with his children.

“I don’t even know what my kids’ voices sound like, to be honest with you,” Michael shared. “I can talk to them, but I don’t know the tone of their voices. That’s the one thing I’m really looking forward to.”

His wife, who nominated him for the giveaway, described him as the backbone of their family. “He works like a dog and still comes home to be a dad,” she said. “He pours his entire soul into our family.”

The Everyday Struggles of Hearing Loss

Living with untreated hearing challenges creates daily obstacles that you might not realize until you experience them. For Michael, simple conversations became a source of anxiety and frustration.

He described the emotional toll of constantly asking people to repeat themselves. “I feel like an inconvenience sometimes,” he admitted. “Having to ask people to repeat themselves is the hardest part of everyday life.”

“A lot of words sound the same when you’re hearing impaired. You start second-guessing if you heard someone right.”

You can imagine how isolating it feels to miss out on the laughter of your children, the reassurance in your partner’s voice, or the small sounds that make up the fabric of daily life.

Michael thought that was his reality until his wife’s nomination touched our hearts, and we knew we had to make a difference to this hard-working family man’s life.

A Life-Changing Gift: Hearing Again

When Michael learned he had been chosen as the Giving Tuesday winner, he felt a mix of excitement and nerves.

“I’m excited and nervous at the same time,” he said before receiving his new hearing aids. “It’s been twelve and a half years since I’ve had hearing aids.”

You benefit from hearing care that goes beyond technology: it’s about restoring connections and confidence, not just hearing.

For Michael, receiving hearing aids meant more than just improved hearing. It meant the chance to communicate more easily with his family, to experience his children’s voices, and to reconnect with the world around him.

“He deserves to hear the children that adore him,” his wife said. “He deserves to hear the birds in the morning and the world around him.”

The Power of Community Generosity

Michael’s story is a testament to the power of community and the impact you can have when you support those around you. His wife’s nomination spoke volumes about the love and appreciation his family feels for him.

Even after exhausting shifts, Michael often helps others with mechanical work, sometimes accepting little or no payment if someone needs help.

You can rest assured that when you support initiatives like Giving Tuesday, you’re helping real people like Michael, whether they be your neighbors, friends, or family members, experience life-changing moments that we often take for granted.
