A 2018 longitudinal study explored the relationship between hearing aid use and the trajectory of cognitive function. Researchers drew from cognitive test scores from the U.S. Health and Retirement Study (HRS), which spanned 18 years.

They analyzed immediate and delayed (episodic) memory scores on recall tasks of adults with and without the use of hearing aids. Results showed that although episodic memory scores decline with age, the rate of decline significantly slowed with hearing aid use. This research highlights a potential mitigating affect of hearing aids on cognitive decline.
