Notes From Dr. Kincaid: Hearing Loss and Parkinson's Disease
Jennifer Kincaid Ph.D., CCC-A, CH-TM
There is growing evidence linking hearing loss to many life-altering conditions, including dementia, diabetes, and interestingly, Parkinson's Disease. The exact mechanism linking hearing loss is not fully understood, but it is hypothesized that dopamine deficiency, neurodegeneration, inflammation, and medication side-effects may play roles.
Recent studies have shown that hearing loss may be an early, non-motor symptom of Parkinson's Disease, similar to the link between the disease and vision loss and hyposmia. It is critical to identify these types of symptoms so that treatment can begin as quickly as possible to delay declines in quality of life.
It is imperative that providers discuss the link between Parkinson's Disease and hearing loss with their patients. Increased awareness and education can lead to better monitoring, intervention, and management of both hearing loss and Parkinson's Disease. Our centers are equipped to evaluate and treat these individuals, and we look forward to partnering with them during their journeys.
Have You Heard The News?
A 2024 research study investigated the link between Parkinson's Disease and hearing loss. This cohort study looked at the electronic medical records of over 3 million U.S. Veterans and found that hearing loss was an independent risk factor for the later development of Parkinson's Disease.
The study also revealed that the poorer the hearing, the greater the risk of Parkinson's Disease. Crucially, results showed that if patients were fit with hearing aids within two years of their first hearing test, the risk of Parkinson's Disease reduced significantly. The authors strongly recommended that hearing screenings be conducted at the primary care level, even for those individuals who do not express hearing concerns.
Prompt referral to an audiologist for additional testing and fitting of hearing aids will ultimately improve patients' health, quality of life, and potentially reduce the risk of Parkinson's Disease.
